JACKSON COUNTY, MI - Propane tank explosions destroyed a Napoleon barn late Saturday night, officials said.

Firefighters responded at 7:14 p.m., June 4 to a residence on the 200 block of South E Avenue, said Napoleon Township Fire Chief Greg Bickford. The barn was behind the residence, he said.

While the fire is still under investigation, Bickford said early indications point to two children playing with fire and accidentally lighting up the barn. Due to the dry wood of the “Amish-style” barn, he said the flames quickly engulfed the entire structure.

A series of propane tank explosions, rendered the barn and its contents, including two vehicles, a total loss, officials said.

Fire crews fought the fire for more than two hours before clearing the scene at 9:30 p.m., officials said. No one suffered any injuries, officials said.

The Napoleon Township Fire Department was assisted by Columbia Township and Grass Lake fire departments, the Napoleon Police Department, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Jackson Community Ambulance.

The fire is still under investigation. Bickford said families need to warn children about the risks of playing with fire.
