TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. – Live Edge Slabs LLC, which specializes in creating tables and desks with live wooden edges, is planning to add two new showrooms this fall in Las Vegas and Portland, Ore., to take orders for its custom product.

Company co-founder Brad Kent Sr. said he and his son worked on home projects with wood and ended up doing research on the popularity of live edge slabs to make tables. The duo then found a great wood source in Costa Rica. The wood is sustainability harvested from fallen trees that have been tagged by the government as being all right to remove, according to Kent.

“All of our live edge slabs are recovered from the depths of the rivers in Central America. Each log is harvested from rivers where logs were cut down by hand and the majority of these logs have been preserved in the waters where they have been deprived of oxygen for more than a century,” said Kent Sr. “The grain, rich patina and density cannot be replaced with freshly harvested wood. Each is truly a treasure and unique in its own way.”

Kent Sr. said the company’s logs are kiln-dried, cut to size and ready to be shipped. The tables are made with either steel or wooden legs and have a hand-rubbed oil finish.

One of the new finishing methods for the company is to use epoxy and wood on a table or countertop to offer the appearance of an ocean beach surface with what looks like ripples in the waves and different layers of depth as it gets farther from the shoreline. The company can also create other looks based on the use of epoxy.

“My son does the ocean tables, which take on their own life with epoxy,” Kent added. “He often gets the ocean color to match the tile in the home.”

Kent Sr. said the demand for live edge custom pieces is very strong. Customers come in wanting traditionally sized dining room tables as well as others that are 25-feet long. The average price for a standard 8-foot dining room table is $3,500, which includes the table being finished, sanded and hand-rubbed with oil.

“Knowing the shipping challenges that are currently occurring, we’ve already picked out the wood we’ll need in late 2022,” Kent Sr. said. “We are building an inventory of wood a year in advance.”

Started in 2017 and based in Tarpon Springs, Fla., Live Edge Slabs currently has a second showroom in Houston that opened in June.
