Fall classes have begun at this Kailua art spot and it means kids can create on paper, with their hands and using a kiln. Mediums include chalk and oil pastels, watercolors, modeling clay, acrylics, charcoal and artist markers. Ceramic classes will use lowfire clay kids will mold, fire and glaze. There are three levels of the weekly drop-in classes: preschool sessions are for an hour on Saturday; elementary students can join in Wednesday, Friday or Saturday; while teenagers work for an hour-and-a-half Friday.

We can’t wait to mark every season and we start with apples (while we stock up on canned pumpkin for mochi and muffins later). Try apple cider doughnuts. We love both moist cake and fluffy fried versions. The key ingredient here is apple cider, not apple juice. We spotted gallons available in Walmart and Target so far. You can also make your own with fresh apples, your choice of sweetener and spices on the stovetop.

If mom and dad would like a more adult drink for the weekend, Paradise Ciders brews its own hard cider in Kalihi. Growlers and cans of are available for takeout in flavors including liliko‘i, mango, pineapple and dragonfruit.

If you’re looking for a reason to head outside, how about a tour with chocolate at the end? It’s been a few years since we’ve gone on Madre Chocolate’s tour which now is on the Windward side instead of Waialua. But the opportunity to see a cacao pod, taste the fresh pulp (which is delicious, by the way), watch chocolate be made and, of course, end with a sweet snack is still a fun day for the family. The new location also includes a visit with baby goats and to view bee hives. Afterward, pause for a picnic or to look for birds at Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden, which is 15 minutes away, or pick up some local fruit, shrimp and beef at Kualoa Ranch for dinner.

Have all the fun of a slumber party without the actual sleepover with a few special guests. The princesses of Storybook Hawai‘i are the hosts for the early evening activities. Groups of 10 kids or fewer will get their nails painted, snack on popcorn, make friendship bracelets, play games and dance in their pajamas with a few of the group’s friendly royal hosts.
